Tax Assessor Department Information

New Jersey’s real property tax is “Ad Valorem” or a “tax according to the value”, meaning that each person pays tax based on the value of the property he or she owns.

The Tax Assessor Office maintains official documents:

  • Initial statement organization claiming tax exemption

Senior Citizens, Disabled Persons, Surviving Spouse
N.J. Constitution authorizes an annual deduction of $250.00 from real property taxes on a dwelling house which is owned and occupied by a citizen of New Jersey as of October 1st of the pretax year, is 65 years or older or permanently and totally disabled or qualifies as a surviving spouse of a senior citizen or disabled person, whose annual income is $10,000 or less, not including social security.

 
Veterans, Surviving Spouse 
To qualify for a deduction a claimant must be a New Jersey citizen prior to October 1st of the pretax year and have active wartime service in United States Armed Forces with Honorable Discharge.

Qualified N.J. resident war veterans having certain - service connected disabilities described in law or having been declared totally or l00% permanently disabled by the U.S. Veterans Administration are granted full tax exemption on their dwelling house and lot.
